UNC basketball coach Roy Williams isn't really big on making public appearances outside of basketball arenas, but he makes an exception for the Chapel Hill Sports Club. Williams entertained the group last Wednesday at their monthly luncheon at Squid's Restaurant, in Chapel Hill.

Baskir, 'Cats

keep winning

East Chapel Hill's Carolyn Baskir repeated last week as girls' champion of PAC-6 conference cross-country, shaving more than 11 seconds off her winning time (19:01) of last year. Baskir (18:49) led six Wildcats who finished in the top 10 last Tuesday, helping them easily pull away from Jordan and Northern Durham for the girls' team title. Allison Smith took second (20:32), Maggie Meshuick (21:27) fourth, Claire Gildard (21:30) fifth, Pagha Kamraus (21:33) sixth and Katie Safrit (21:44) eighth for the Wildcats.

Jordan took the boys' team title, edging Northern Durham by six points and East Chapel Hill by nine. Three male Wildcats placed in the top 10: David Calderon-Guthe (18:05) in fourth, Sam Minor (18:16) fifth and Matt Wilson in eighth (18:46).

Northern Durham's Blake Williams (16:55) won the boys' individual championship.

Tigers take two more titles

It was a new conference, but a very familiar result last week at Chapel Hill High School. Running on their home course, the CHHS harriers hosted and won both the boys' and girls' titles at the inaugural Carolina-Six 3-A Conference cross-country championship meet. Fittingly enough, Chapel Hill Ron Olsen was named Conference Coach of the Year for both boys and girls after guiding the Tigers to an undefeated run in dual meets.

Led by Carolina-Six Female Runner of the Year Tristan Van Ord, in first place with a time of 19:04, Chapel Hill had every female finish in the top 12 as they tallied 34 points to Cardinal Gibbons' 43. Orange (52) was third and Webb (120) fourth.

Chapel Hill's Sarah Jane Kerwin placed third (in 19:27), followed by teammates Meg Duffy (19:54) in ninth, Ahna Weeks (20:01) 10th, Lindsay Savelli (20:06) 11th and Alexa Young (20:11) in 12th. Each of them were named to the all-conference team. Also named all-conference were Sarah Rapp, Samiiah Wilson and Nicole Esplin of Cardinal Gibbons, and Orange High's Mackenzie Robinson, Indy Reid-Shaw and Devon Allen.

Seven Tigers were named to the Boys' all-conference team: Paul Noah, Asher Colburn-Hertzberg, Jacob Hoerger, Liam Stott, Kyle Villemain, Danny Philips and Brad Viles,

Male Runner of the Year of Cardinal Gibbons was joined on the honors team by fellow Crusader Mark Sullivan and Orange's Dylan Skinner and Ryan Thedford.

Chapel Hill won the boys' championship with 26 points, followed by Cardinal Gibbons (39), Orange (66), Southern Vance (132) and Oxford Webb (136).

Noah (16:12) had the top time for the CHHS boys and finished third in the meet. Colburn-Hertzberg (16:19), Hoerger (16:20), Stott (16:21), Villemain (16:26) and Philips (16:29) all finished in the top 10. Will Bunch (18:00) took 19th. Olsen held out Viles, (whose personal best 5K is 16:06, ) because of a tweaked back.

CHHS freshman Chris Reeder won the JV race in 16:31.

Chapel Hill will serve as host for the 3-A regional meet next Saturday afternoon at WakeMed Park in Cary.

Carrboro in front

Carrboro's top-ranked cross-country teams captured both the boys' and girls' titles at Tuesday's Carolina-Nine 1-A/2-A Conference Meet, held at Northwood High School. Carrboro's outstanding ninth-grader Grace Morken won the girls' 5K race in 20:02 to lead five Jaguar earning all-conference honors; Laura Hamon (20:20). Frankie Perone (20:40), Maisie Mraz (21:14) and Alexa Phillips (21:27) all finished in the top 10.

The Carrboro boys won with 44 points, in a close battle with NCHSAA 1-A's top-ranked N.C. Science and Math. Three Jaguars -- Tyler Oleski (17:40), Elliot Pahel-Short (17:43) and Ty Fenton (17:51) -- all finished in the tip 10 and earned all-conference honors.
