In Wentworth, Chapel Hill took down Mid-State champion Rockingham with a 25-21, 23–25, 25–16, 25-12, road win. Three Tigers had double-digit kills — Katelyn Layden (16), Megan McCluskey (14) and Kiaya Robinson (11) — while setter Elise Healy had perhaps her best all-around match of 2009, with 43 assists and 5 serving aces.
Cardinal Gibbons swept McMichael, 3 sets to none on Tuesday, and the OHS Panthers won a five-set match at former Mid-State rival Eastern Alamance. Southern Vance upset Mid-Piedmont champion Southern Guilford in four sets Tuesday.
In the 2-A East, Cedar Ridge (21-4) plays in the third round of the playoffs Thursday night against Bunn (23-3), champion of the Northern Carolina Conference and a 3-0 winner Tuesday over St. Pauls.
Playing at Hillsborough, the Red Wolves swept High Point Andrews on Tuesday, 25-13, 25-10, 25-4, to advance. Taylor Thompson made 18 kills and Emily Holmes 12 kills to lead CRHS, while Morgan Veasey made 10 blocks, and Chelsea Howlett had 29 assists and 2 aces.
