Fifth-year senior Marcus Ginyard matched his career high with 17 points to help the sixth-ranked Tar Heels beat North Carolina Central in the 2K Sports Classic. The Tar Heels (2-0) broke it open with 21 straight first-half points, shooting 69 percent in the opening half and 59 percent for the game, and dominating the transitional Division I Eagles from nearby Durham in the first meeting between the schools. Carolina will step out of the Classic to benefit Coaches vs. Cancer with a weekend home game against Valparaiso on Sunday, then travel to New York to face Ohio State in the event next week.N.C. No. 6 Carolina too big and just too talented for the Golden Panthers, alerting first-year FIU coach Isiah Thomas that his first year back in college could frustrating. Deon Thompson scored 20 points and was one of four players in double-figures for North Carolina (1-0), which shot 56 percent and dominated the boards after halftime to kick off its centennial season. For Thomas, eh, he didn't seem fazed by the loss, remaining relaxed as he entered the postgame press conference and even telling reporters, "I'm not quite sure how this works in college. Somebody's going to have to kind of coach me through it." His debut came on the same day his 86-year-old mother, Mary, had open-heart surgery in Chicago.FIU (0-1): Roberts 6-17 4-4 18, Bright 5-8 0-0 10, Gacesa 1-4 0-0 3, Weaver 1-5 0-0 3, Gary Jr. 1-8 3-4 5, Watson 5-14 4-5 16, Otero 2-5 0-0 5, Russell 3-6 3-4 10, Miro 1-1 0-0 2, Crowder 0-0 0-0 0, Anderson 0-0 0-0 0, Crawford 0-0 0-0 0.
