East Chapel Hill head coach Ray Hartsfield (top photo) puts some body english on as point guard Aaron Law (bottom photo) brings the ball up court in transition during a scrimmage Thursday night at Panther Creek High School. A starter most of last year at point guard, Law figures to be a major component in the Wildcats' plans for 2009-10.

Hartsfield, who guided the Wildcats to a 3-A state championship in East's first year of existence, took his team to Cary last Thursday to get in some court time before the start of the regular season this week. The Wildcats start off with a home game Friday against county rival Cedar Ridge (girls at 6 p.m. and the boys at 7:30 p.m.)

Carrboro opens its season Tuesday Lee Senior, with the varsity girls (6 p.m.) and boys (7:30 p.m.) varsities hosting the Yellow Jackets, while the JVs will play in Sanford. Chapel Hill will play one more round of scrimmages this weekend at the White Oak Jam in Jacksonville and then open its regular season Nov. 23 against Granville Central.
