After the Carolina baseball team staved off elimination for two straight games behind late, game-winning home runs, the Tar Heel bats could not produce another miracle Sunday night. Fresno State eliminated UNC 6-1, halting the Heels' hopes of returning to a third straight Championship Series.

Instead, the Bulldogs (45-31) advanced to square off in a three-game series with the Georgia school with the same nickname. The East Coast-based Bulldogs took game one on Monday.

Coach Mike Fox's team (54-14) faces an uncertain future after three underclassmen (Tim Fedroff, Tim Federowicz and Adam Warren) and seven incoming recruits were drafted earlier this month, including four in the first 115 selections.

Federowicz hit a grand slam in the top of the ninth to knock out LSU 7-3 on Friday, and senior Chad Flack's two-run shot in the bottom of the eighth lifted the Heels to a 4-3 victory against Fresno one day later.

Flack's blast was one of many famous homers he hit as a Tar Heel, and his class led a revolution over the past four years that has seen Carolina emerge out of nowhere as a national power.

While Flack -- who has more at-bats in the College World Series than any player ever -- and his classmates won't get to experience it, their success has led to a $25 million renovation of Boshamer Stadium. The new Boshamer and future Tar Heel teams promise to be quite a draw: In fact, a sign has even been added above the markers on 15-501 (by Manning Drive) for the Smith Center, Kenan Stadium and UNC Hospitals that simply says "Baseball Stadium," and points the way.
