Who's No. 1? LaxPower has announced the National Coaches/Computer Ratings for high school boys' lacrosse for the recently completed spring season, and Gilman School of Baltimore is the national champion for 2008. Gilman (18-1-0) finished in first place both in the computer ratings and in the poll, garnering 21 of the 48 first-place votes from the coaches. The final poll is notable for the fact that Gilman was one of only two teams (both located outside North Carolina) to defeat N.C. prep champion Chapel Hill. The other was St. Anne's-Belfield (Va.), which finished 114th.

Chapel Hill (20-2-0) strengthened its claim that the 2008 Tigers could be the best prep team ever in North Carolina by finishing 232nd, ahead of several well-known programs with longer histories.

Reality bites

The Carolina RailHawks kept Rayados de Monterrey scoreless for 90 minutes in their international exhibition last weekend, but eventually the difference between second division U.S. Soccer League and the Mexican First Division emerged. Rayados de Monterrey won in penalty kicks (4-1). Still, the more than 7,000 fans who descended on WakeMed Soccer Park to catch a glimpse of soccer superstars Jared Borgetti and Humberto Suazo got their money's worth.

The RailHawks are on the road Thursday at Portland and at Vancouver on Saturday. They return home to host the Vancouver Whitecaps on Friday Aug. 1 at WakeMed Soccer Park at 8 p.m. in the second of four nationally televised games.
