Carolina Baseball Club will conduct tryouts for competitive youth baseball teams (ages 9, 10, 11 and 12 years old) in two sessions this month: Nov. 16 and Nov. 22-23, both at Carrboro's Hank Anderson Park, Field No. 1. Each team will compete in weekend tournaments, which typically begin in March and end with a championship in June. Game locations include Raleigh, Rocky Mount and Greensboro. Gallop and Gorge: This annual 5-mile race affords Thanksgiving diners the chance at absolution before they dig into the gravy and mashed potatoes. (It also caps another year of Tour de Carrboro racing series.) Held on Thanksgiving morning, Nov. 27, it steps off at 8 a.m. at the Fleet Feet store in Carrboro Mall. UNC Track & Field is looking for individuals interested in becoming meet officials, says Andrew Allden of UNC Athletics. Carolina will host a certification course from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 13, at the Eddie Smith Indoor Track. Fees include USATF membership ($30 per year) and officials' certification ($25, good through 2011). Certified officials are compensated for working UNC meets and can choose to work as few or as many meets as desired. Coaching opportunities: Carrboro Recreation and Parks Department is currently accepting volunteer coach's applications for 2009 Spring Baseball (players six to 15 years old) and Girls Volleyball (players 10 to 13 years old). Coaches should exhibit the ability to organize practices and communicate effectively with players, parents, and recreation department staff. They must also exhibit the ability to teach proper playing skills and fundamentals, sportsmanship, and provide an enjoyable atmosphere at practices and games.
