BASKETBALL

No. 800 for Hatchell

It wasn't exactly pretty, and it took longer than most of her other 799 wins, but the North Carolina women's basketball coach Sylvia Hatchell got her 800th career victory Sunday night against ACC rival North Carolina State. Hatchell joined Pat Summitt, Jody Conradt and C. Vivian Stringer after improving to 800-274 in 34 seasons, with 528 of those victories coming in 23 seasons in Chapel Hill. While at North Carolina, she has won eight Atlantic Coast Conference championships, reached three Final Fours and won the 1994 NCAA title.

After the No. 2 Tar Heels struggled offensively for two halves against the Wolfpack, they dominated overtime, winning 75-66, improving to 2-0 in the ACC and 16-0 overall. Hatchell looks to win number 801 as the team hopes to stay undefeated Friday night when they host Virginia at the Smith Center.

SWIMMING

Heels win twice

Swimming its first dual meets in over two months, the 13th-ranked University of North Carolina men's swimming and diving team and 14th-ranked women's team scored victories over Clemson Saturday afternoon at McHugh Natatorium. The Tar Heel men defeated the Tigers 180-118 and the UNC women triumphed by a score of 174-124. Carolina ran its dual meet win streak to three in a row for both the men and women as both teams are now 4-2 overall and 2-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Freshmen Will Singley and Evan Reed stoof out for the men as each had an individual win and swam in a winning relay team. Sophomore Rebecca Kane took two individual events and the two relays while junior Megan Steeves won one individual and one relay and sophomore Katura Harvey had two individual wins and a relay win for the women.

GOOD TELEVISION

HBO readies

'Tobacco Road'

HBO Sports has begun production on the long-expected documentary "Battle For Tobacco Road: Duke vs. Carolina," chronicling what many hardwood observers consider college basketball's fiercest rivalry. Tracing the history of the rivalry, as well as examining the different cultures and characteristics of the programs in Durham and Chapel Hill, the hour-long special debuts at 9 p.m. Monday, Feb. 23 on HBO (channel 400 on local Time-Warner Cable).

"This film will explore how a cross-town rivalry between two prestigious academic universities in North Carolina has escalated into one of the most scrutinized and intense rivalries in college sports," said Ross Greenburg, president of HBO Sports. "The regular season showdowns and the ACC Tournament meetings between these two schools have become national events, and we'll explore how it all started and what it means to have played in one of these contests."

The high-profile list of interviewees from the Blue Devils and Tar Heels weighing in on the intense rivalry includes Hall of Fame coaches Dean Smith and Mike Krzyzewski, and all-time great players Michael Jordan, James Worthy and Charlie Scott, as well as some players from the best private university in Durham County: Grant Hill, Johnny Dawkins and Christian Laettner. Also among those interviewed as the piece went into production included author Will Blythe of Chapel Hill, who wrote the definitive "To Hate Like This Is to Be Happy Forever: A Thoroughly Obsessive, Intermittently Uplifting, and Occasionally Unbiased Account of the Duke-North Carolina Basketball Rivalry."

... But first, this

ESPN College GameDay, the pregame show featuring hosts Rece Davis, Jay Bilas, former Tar Heel Hubert Davis, and Digger Phelps will broadcast live from center court of the Dean E. Smith Center on Saturday, Jan. 17 beginning at 10am for SportsCenter and from 11am-12pm for College GameDay. Later that evening at 9 p.m., North Carolina plays host to ACC rival Miami in a nationally televised game on ESPN. Fans interested in being part of the GameDay audience should use entrances C or D, beginning at 8:30 a.m

CAROLINA

Fencers split

After a break of almost two months, the University of North Carolina men's and women's fencing teams got back into the swing of competition over the weekend at the Penn Multi-Meets, hosted by the University of Pennsylvania at the Quakers' Hutchinson Gym. The Tar Heel women went 3-3 on Saturday and the men were 3-2 on Sunday.

"This was our first really strong competition of the year," UNC coach," Ron Miller said. "It was rough coming straight back from break to this competition but everyone fenced with courage and intensity. Even though the meets that we did lose were only by a few bouts, those bouts were almost all 4-5 bouts. Really, we were within touches of winning the meet. Even with the losses, everyone stayed focused regardless of the outcome, win or lose."

The UNC fencers hadn't been in a match since the Temple Invitational on Nov. 15-16. They'll return to action Jan. 24. at the MACFA duals at Johns Hopkins.

BRIEFLY...

UNC Coach Roy Williams is holding Marcus Ginyard out of action for a while, since he has been unable to play or practice at full speed while rehabilitating his left foot. NCAA rules won't allow the senior swingman to redshirt if he plays another game, now that UNC is past the midway point of the season. ... There are just three teams left with a chance at the first unbeaten season in Division I since Indiana in 1976: No. 1 Pittsburgh, No. 2 Wake Forest and No. 10 Clemson. Memphis had the longest run last season, winning its first 26 games before losing 66-62 to Tennessee in a 1-vs.-2 matchup. Kansas reached 20-0, while North Carolina started 18-0. ... ... Bob Yakos of Clemmons was declared the winner of Wake Forest's "Last Fan Sitting" contest after he braved wind, rain and low temperatures to win four season tickets for the next 15 years. The 40-year-old physician's assistant beat out 23 other contestants after spending almost 75 hours at the university's BB&T Field. ... Bobby Bowden, age 79, plans to be back for a 34th season as coach at Florida State.
