- "Big City and other Places," a collection of paintings of towns, neighborhoods and cities by Valerie Tan, is on display at the Women's Health Information Center art gallery on the ground floor of the N.C. Women's Hospital at 101 Manning Drive through March. A reception is scheduled for Thursday, 5-6 p.m. www.nchealthywoman.org. 843-1759.

- The Ackland Art Museum is exhibiting "Perspectives on Public Justice," "Glorifying Patronage: Art in Service of Family, Fame, and Fortune," "Picturing the World: Carolina's Celebrated Photojournalists" and "The Pursuit of Learning: Images of Study, Scholarship, and Education." - The McDougle Elementary School Face Jug project is on display through May 31 at Kidzu Children's Museum, 105 E. Franklin St., 933-1455.
- An exhibit of Jeff Cohen's photography and Lori Easterlin's mixed-media work is at the Chapel Hill Public Library, 100 Library Drive, through April 2.
- The Robert and Pearl Seymour Center, 2551 Homestead Road, is exhibiting "Silverarts, through April 10. The show is a component of Senior Games. Call Janice Tyler at 968-2071 about applying to exhibit at the center.
- Main Street Gallery, 405 E. Main Street in Carrboro, is highlighting nature and botanical photographs by Jenny Parker. 967-7005.
- The Allcott Gallery in the UNC Hanes Art Center, 115 S. Columbia St., is exhibiting Don Henson's sculptures of wood and aluminum through March 20. On March 25, the annual honors exhibition opens. 962-2015.
- "Flora, Friend and Foe," paintings by Dale A. Morgan and Claire Alderks Miller, is on exhibit at the North Carolina Botanical Garden's Totten Center through April 30. 962-0522. www.ncbg.unc.edu.
- Nested, 118 E. Main St. in Carrboro, is showing Dawn Rozzo's mixed-media works based on botanical and floral imagery. - "PepperPot: Multi Media Installation, Meaning, and the Medium in Contemporary Diasporic Art" is at the Robert and Sallie Brown Gallery and Museum in The Sonja Haynes Stone Center on the UNC-Chapel Hill Campus, 150 South Road. - An exhibit celebrating Black History Month is at Chapel Hill Town Hall through March 31. Town Hall is at 405 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.
- An exhibit of work by students at the Community Independent School, curated by art teacher Tori Ralston, is at the Carrboro Century Center. The center is at 100 N. Greensboro St.
- Dave Otto's photographs are on exhibit at Carrboro Town Hall, 301 W. Main St. "Bolin Creek and Woodlands: Natural Treasures" includes more than 40 prints of the creek, wildflowers, autumn foliage, critters and reflections. Twenty-five percent of sale proceeds benefit Friends of Bolin Creek and 25 percent will benefit the Carrboro Art Committee. http://www.daveottophotos.com.

- "Elements of Visual Arts: Part One-Textiles," featuring the textile work of 21 artists, is at The Carrboro Branch Library until April 8. - The Carrboro Appearance Commission is inviting artists to enter a competition to create a plaque that will be available for purchase by residential and commercial owners whose buildings meet certain criteria to qualify as historic Carrboro buildings.
