Hoodoo, a five-piece funk and rock band, will perform on center stage at this month's Last Fridays celebration in downtown Hillsborough on Friday.

The monthly event will also feature an artist demonstrator, an art walk, vendor booths, and a film series at the Masonic Lodge sponsored by the Hillsborough Arts Council.

The five members of Hoodoo have played with one another in various configurations and under various names for more than 20 years, but only recently banded together as Hoodoo.

The band is fronted by Annie Woods, who was won numerous awards and sold hundreds of thousands of recodings with the band Toronto. Her most recent CD -- a solo effort entitled "Live It Up" and released under her stage name Holly Woods -- was released late last year.

The band also features Mark Davison on drums, Rob Rabb on harp, Jeff Saginaw on guitar, and David Bradford on bass. The four have played together as Suspicious White Males and Better Days, among other prominent Triangle bands.

The artist demonstrator will be Sheila Kerrigan, billed as "The Mime Who Talks! The Juggler Who Drops!"

The Art Walk will include Melissa Designer Jewelry (pastel landscapes by Cheryl Sweeney), The Skylight Gallery (mixed media exhibitions "Avantgarde" by Sharon Barksdale-Worth and "Mass Appeal" by Artie Barksdale), Coldwell Banker Howard Perry and Walston (paintings by Victoria Riddell), Cup A Joe (paintings by Chance Murray), the Hillsborough Gallery of Arts ("Entrances and Exits," paintings by Kim Wheaton and Patricia Merriman), the Churton Street Realty Art Gallery (works by David Sovero).

Free Maple View ice cream will be served by local celebrities, and lawn games will be available for children at the Burwell School Historic Site, 319 N. Churton St.

The Orange County Historical Museum, 201 N. Churton St., will host "Night for the Red, White, and Blue" with a cake walk set to patriotic music inside the museum. The Marla Vickers Band will perform.

Hillsborough Presbyterian Church, 102 W. Tryon St., will host a performance by Chicks'n Ribs.

The Filmmaker's Film Series at the Masonic Lodge (142 W. King St., will present "The Piano in Movies." Alex Villeda, a student from Yanceyville, will play Chopin's Ballade in G minor, which was used in the movie "The Pianist." Afterward, the series will present another installment of Chucklefest, featuring short silent films with live piano accompaniment by Peter Estep.

Half-hour screenings will be held at 7, 8, and 9 p.m. The show is appropriate for all ages. The event is free and open to the public. For information about the film series, contact program director Andrea DeGette at andreadegette@earthlink.net or (919) 644-8265.

The new Weaver Street Market, 228 S. Churton St., will celebrate its grand opening and the co-op's 20th anniversary from 6 to 8 p.m. with marimba music, face painting, Balloonman Bob and Henna tattoos.

Businesses will hold extended hours and special offerings during the Last Fridays event.

Plenty of parking is available at the new Eno River parking deck.
